Every April across the U.S., individuals and organizations with a passion for sexual violence prevention take part in Sexual Assault Awareness Month, or SAAM. The goal of SAAM is to raise awareness about sexual violence and educate communities on how to prevent it. The 2025 theme is “Together We Act, United We Change.” This theme highlights the power of working together to prevent sexual abuse, assault, and harassment in order to create safer, more respectful environments for all.

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC)

  • -One in five women in the United States experienced completed or attempted rape during their lifetime.
  • -Nearly a quarter (24.8%) of men in the U.S. experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetime.
  • -Nationwide, 81% of women and 43% of men reported experiencing some form of sexual harassment and/or assault in their lifetime.
  • -One in three female victims and one in four male victims of completed or attempted rape experienced it for the first time between the ages of 11 and 17.

While one month isn’t enough to solve the serious issue of sexual violence, SAAM is an opportunity to open up conversation about consent and prevention efforts throughout the year.

We can act together in changing conversations about sexual violence, supporting survivors, and preventing sexual violence before it ever happens.

What Can You Talk About Leading Up to, During, and After SAAM 2025?

  • Check out events near you.  Wear Teal Day on April 1 and Denim Day on April 30 are national events. Snap a pic of you and friends or co-workers raising awareness by wearing teal or denim and share to #WRC or #TeenWRC . There are local events as well (See calendar below!).
  • -Donate to WRC to help us reach our mission to eliminate domestic violence and sexual abuse through advocacy, education, and systemic change while empowering all survivors with comprehensive services.  There are multiple ways to support WRC, and you can even put #SAAM in the notes section of the donation form to signify that you are supporting our SA work.
  • -Share educational materials with your community in person or online. This can include information on sexual assault and consent, as well as how to get involved.
  • -Follow WRC on social media for posts to share all month long – we are on Facebook, Instagram, and Linked In.
  • -Show your support by listening to and believing survivors.
  • Engage in conversations in your community about preventing sexual abuse, assault, and harassment and calling out harmful behavior.
